Walter was born in Calverton in 1899 the son of William and Hannah Binch, in the 1911 census the family are living at Foxwood Terrace, Calverton he is shown as a scholar and he has 7 siblings.
Walter originally enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment (31355) but later transferred to the Highland Light Infantry. He was buried in the Royal Irish Graveyard Laventie, Pas de Calais, France (grave ref. Laventie German M.C).
CWGC record gives his date of death as 17 April 1918 although the commemoration on his parents' headstone in Calverton churchyard gives the date 9 April 1918.
