Ernest Binch is recorded on both the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and UK Soldiers Died in the Great War records as Ernest', not 'Ernest F.' He was born in 1898 in Calverton and on the 1911 census is shown as being 13 yrs of age,single and working as a day boy on a farm. He lived at Georges Lane Calverton with his father David Binch born 1856 and mother Sarah born 1857. He has six brothers and sisters living with him at that time, however the 1911 census records that his parents had 16 children by 1911, all of whom had survived.
He enlisted in Mansfield in the Sherwood Foresters but later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action on 21 July 1918 and was buried in Meteren British Cemetery, Nord, France (grave ref. I.B.65).
His brother David served in the 17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (28198 Private) and was killed in France on 23 July 1916 (St Vass Post Military Cemetery). Bertie Binch, the son of their brother Henry Livingstone Binch and his wife Mary Ann, served in the 15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (30816 Private) and was killed on 27 March 1918 (Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension).
