Note :- David's surname on both UKSDGW and CWGC is shown as 'Birch'. David was born in 1881 in Calverton, the son of David and Sarah Binch (née Rose). His mother Sarah was born in Calverton on 25 June 1856, the daughter of Edward and Mary Rose; she was baptised at the parish church of St Wilfrid on 12 April 1857. In 1871 the family was living in Stripes Yard, Calverton; Sarah (14) was still at school. David and Sarah were married at Calverton St Wilfrid on 16 May 1875 (A/M/J Basford) and according to the 1911 Census had 16 children, all of whom were still living at the time of the census. Their two eldest children were born before their marriage: Henry Livingston Rose (later Rose-Binch or Binch) b. 1873 (O/N/D Basford) baptised St Wilfrid 24 February 1875, and Albert B Rose (later Binch) b. abt 1875. Their other children were: Arthur D, James, Phoebe, Samuel, David, Ellen, Boyyer, Nelson, Herbert, Bertha, Alvy/Alvey May, John, Ernest and Leonard. In 1881 the family was living in Stripes Yard, Calverton. On the 1911 census David was recorded at 30 Victoria Road, Kirkby in Ashfeld and shown as single and working as a coal miner/hewer.
He died of wounds received in action and was buried in St Vass Post Military Cemetery, Richborg L'Avoue, France (grave ref. III.H.12).
His brother Ernest served in the Machine Gun Corps (154674 Private) formerly Sherwood Foresters, and was killed in France on 21 July 1918 (Meteren British Cemetery). Bertie Binch, the son of their brother Henry Livingstone Binch and his wife Mary Ann, served in the 15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (30816 Private) and was killed in France on 27 March 1918 (Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension).
