Joseph Hadgkiss was born in 1899 at Preston and was the son of Harry James Alexander Hadgkiss a head teacher and Ellen Hadgkiss née Hacking, of The Meadows, Blidworth. His father Harry James Alexander was born in 1875 at Brierly Hill, Staffordshire, his mother Ellen Hacking was born in 1876 at Preston, they were married in 1899 their marriage was recorded in the Blackburn registration district, they went on to have the following children, Joseph b1899 Preston, Hannah b1902 Preston and Phyllis b1906 Farnsfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Meadows, Blidworth and are shown as Harry James Alexander 36 yrs a head teacher, he is living with his wife Ellen 35 yrs and their children, Joseph 11 yrs a scholar, Hannah 9 yrs a scholar and Phyllis 5 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Joseph Hadgkiss enlisted at Mnasfield whilst residing at Blidworth, he served with the 20th battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 4th September 1918 and is buried at Voormezeele Enclosure No. 3 West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
