Herbert Sharpe Sills wasa born on 27th July 1899 at Car Colston and was the son of Herbert Leonard a coal miner and Sarah Jane Sills née Sharpe of Main St., Blidworth, Mansfield. His father Herbert Leonard was born in 1879 at Scarrington his mother Sarah Jane Sharpe was born in 1882 at East Stoke, they were married on 3rd May 1901 at the Leicester Registry Office, they go on to have the following children, Annie Elizabeth Sharpe born 2nd September 1902 at Southwell, Percy Richard born 28th January 1907 Blidworth, Jessie born 11th April 1908 at Blidworth, George Sidney born 1st July 1910 at Blidworth and Dorothy born 10th July 1912 Blidworth. in the 1911 census the family are living at Heywood Oaks, Blidworth and were shown as Herbert Leonard Sills 29 yrs a waggoner on a farm, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 29 yrs and their children, Herbert Sharpe 11 yrs a scholar, Annie Elizabeth 8 yrs a scholar, Percy Richard 4 yrs, Jessie 2 years and George Sidney 9 months of age.
Private Herbert Sharpe Sills enlisted at Leicester, he had previously seen service as a 'boy' in the Royal Navy giving his date of birth as 27th July 1899 and his occupation as pit boy, he joined the Royal Navy on 27th July 1917 for 12 yrs service but was medically unfit after 6 months service and discharged. He served with the service number 54071 in the 15th / 17th battalion of the Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) He was killed in action on 19th July 1918 and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium.
His father Herbert Leonard Sils also served during the 'Great War' he enlisted on 27th January 1915 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 32 yrs and 94 days and his address of Players Yard, Blidworth, he gave his wife Sarah Jane Sills of the same address as his next of kin. He joined at No 3 Depot Royal Field Artillery at Hilsop and was posted as a driver in the Royal Field Artillery. He went to France on 20th November 1915 and was posted to the 21st Divisional Ammunition Column on 24th November 1915. He returned to England on 28th January 1919 and posted to the reserves on 18th March 1919. He was discharged from the Army on 31st March 1920. .
