Harry Maxfield was born in 1883 at Blidworth and was the son of Walter Maxfield a saddler and harness maker and Mary Maxfield née Kitching of Grove Cottage Blidworth. His father Walter was born in 1856 at Blidworth and his mother Mary Kitching was born at 1861 also at Blidworth, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 9 children, their children were , Harry b1883, Charles b1884 (died 1895) Emily b1887,May b1889, Ida b1893, Elsie b1895, Cecil b1898, Walter b1901 and Archie b1904, all were born at Blidworth. In the 1911 census the family are living at Blidworth and are shown as Walter 58 yrs a saddler and harness maker, he is living with his wife Mary 50 yrs and their children, Harry 28 yrs a coal miner, Emily 24 yrs a cook, Ida 18 yrs an elementary school teacher, Elsie 16 yrs no occupation, Cecil 13 yrs a scholar, Walter 10 yrs a scholar and Archie 7 yrs of age.
Sapper Harry Maxfield enlisted on 20th January 1915, at Nottingham, he was 32 yrs and 3 months old and lived at Grove Cottage, Blidworth his next of kin was his father Walter of the same address , he gave his occupation as that of a saddler. He was posted to the Royal Engineers with the service number 66288. on 4th February 1915 he went to the Royal Engineers depot at Chatham for training. On 9th July 1915 he went to France, until 22nd February 1916. He was discharged from the Army on 12th May 1916 as no longer physically fit, diagnosed with Rectal Carcinoma. He was issued a Silver War Badge number B263112 According to the Blidworth memorials, he died two months later on 17th July 1916, he died of heart failure.
