Family History

Robert Berridge was born in 1887 at Blidworth and was the son of John a farm labourer and Sarah Berridge née Rawson of Fishpool, Nottinghamshire His father was born in 1842 at Blidworth and his mother Sarah Rawson was born in 1847 at Southwell, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were James b1866, Henry b1868, John b1871, William 1872, Hannah b1875, George b1876, Margaret b1878, Samuel b1881, Harriett b1884, Robert b1887 and Sarah b1892, all were born at Blidworth. Robert Berridge married hs wife Selina Swift (born 2nd November 1885 at Kimberley) on 17th April 1908 at St Thomas Church, East Kirkby , they lived at Fishpool (Ravenshead) and had the following children, James Leslie born 21st August 1908 at East Kirby, Margaret born 10th July 1910 Blidworth and Selina born 26th June 1912 Blidworth. In the 1911 census Robert and his family are living at Fishpool and are shown as Robert Berridge 23 yrs a collier , he is living with his wife Selina 25 yrs and their children, James Leslie 2 yrs and Margaret 9 months of age. In the same 1911 census his parents are also residing at Fishpool and are shown as John 67 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 62 yrs and their son Samuel 29 yrs an invalid (consumption)

Military History

Rifleman Robert Berridge enlisted on 16th December 1914 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 26 yrs and 295 days and was a coal miner, he lived at Fishpool (Ravenshead) and his next of kin was his wife Selina. He joined the King's Royal Rifle Corps at their barracks at Winchester on 17th December 1914. He landed in France on 16th March 1915 and died of wounds on 15th May 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
