Family History

Joseph Cresswell Godfrey was born in 1885 at Blidworth and was the son of Thomas Cresswell, a farmer, and Matilda Godfrey née Timmins. His father Thomas Cresswell was born in 1849 at Newstead, his mother Matilda Timmins was born in 1856 at Blidworth. They were married in 1881 (Mansfield Registration District) and had the following children: Mary b1883, Joseph b1885, Lucy b1888 and Florence b1892 who were all were born at Blidworth. In the 1911 census the family was living at Blidworth and shown as Thomas 62 yrs a farmer and carter, his wife Matilda 55 yrs and their children Mary 28 yrs, Joseph 26 yrs a farmers assistant and Florence 19 yrs. Also living with them were four grandchildren.

Military History

Private Joseph Cresswell Godfrey enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
