Family History

Arthur was the eldest son of John and Ann North. His father John North was born in Barton-in-Fabis and his mother Ann in Clayhole, Lincolnshire. They were married in about 1889 and had five children who were all born in Barton-in-Fabis: Maria, Arthur, Harry, Jane and Alice. In 1891 John (34), Ann (36) and their three children Maria (8), Arthur (6) and Harry (3) were living in Barton in Fabis. In 1901 John (44), a cattleman on a farm, and Ann (46) were living at Little Lunnon, Barton-in-Fabis, with four of their five children: Arthur a horseman on a farm, Harry a horse boy on a farm, Jane (9) and Alice (5). Their eldest child, Maria, was a servant in the household of Lord and Lady Belper of Kingston Hall, Kingston on Soar. By 1911 only Alice was living with her parents, who were still in Barton-in-Fabis. Her father, John, was now working as a plaster miner. Her sister Jane was a domestic servant in the home of John Barnes, an iron founder (employer) and his wife Maryin Radford, Nottingham. Arthur was working as a steel smelter's helper and a boarder in Middlesborough The two other children, Maria and Harry, have not yet been traced on the 1911 Census. His mother Ann died on 8 February 1932 aged 78 years and his father John on 14 September 1942 aged 86.

Military History

Arthur was killed in action on 14 November 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France (Pier 8D).

Inscription on family gravestone, St George's churchyard, Barton-in-Fabis: ‘In sacred memory of Ann North. died Feby. 8th 1932 aged 78 years. Also John North, died Sepr. 14th 1942 aged 86. Laid to rest at Carnford, Co. Durham. Also their son Arthur. Killed in action 1916. And Thomas Wright, died Dec 5th 1985, aged 93. Also Jane Wright, died Jan. 13th 1992 aged 100. Reunited with her daughter Marjorie.’ Registers of Soldiers' Effects: His father, John, was his sole legatee.
