William Wardle (junior) was born at Arnold in 1894, he was the son of William (senior) a bleacher and Esther Wardle née Goodall of 39 St Albans Road, Arnold, Nottingham. His father William (senior) was born in 1862 at Basford, his mother Esther Goodall was born in 1862 at Belper, Derbyshire, they were married in 1883 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Caroline b1893, William b1895, James Henry b1899 and Esther May b1906 all were born in Arnold . In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 West Stret, Arnold and are shown as William Wardle 49 yrs a bleacher, he is living with his wife Esther 49 yrs and their children, Caroline 18 yrs a hosiery makerup, William 16 yrs a blacksmiths striker, James Henry 12 yrs a scholar and Esther May 5 yrs of age. William (junior) was raised and educated in the town attending the British School on Front Street.
Corporal William Wardle enlisted into the army at Kimberley, Nottinghamshire, joining his local regiment the Sherwood Foresters. He was posted to the 1/8th battalion. He went to France, with the battalion on the 25th February 1915 and was killed in action in the Loos area on 14th October 1915. His body was never identified and he has no known grave, being commemorated on the Loos Memorial Panels 87 to 89.
