John Edward Turner was born at Nottingham in 1896 he was the son of William a colliery banksman and Alice Turner née James of 84 Wilfred Cottages, St Albans Road, Arnold, Nottingham, His father William was born in 1874 at Arnold, his mother Alice James was born in 1874 also at Arnoild, they were married in 1895 their marriage was registered in the Basford registration district, Alice brought a daughter to their marriage, Emma James born 1893 they went on to have the following children, John Edward b1896 and Eveline b1900 In the 1911 Census the family are living at 84 Wilfred Cottages, St Albans Road, Arnold, they are shown as William Turner 37 yrs a colliery banksman he is living with his wife Alice 37 yrs and their children, John Edward he is 15 yrs of age and a pony driver (underground at colliery ) and is single and Emma James 18 yrs a blouse machinist.
Lance Corporal John Edward Turner enlisted into the Army joining the North Staffordshire Regiment with regimental number 24840. At some time later, most probably after having been wounded and being sent to the Bull Ring at Etaples, he was posted into the Lancashire Fusiliers. He was in action during the battle of the Somme. It was during the continuance of the offensive in the Albert/Thiepval area that John was killed in action when aged 20 years. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France
