James Sulley was born at Arnold in 1894, the son of the late George a frame work knitter and Mary Sulley née Dickens of 19 Draytons Yard, Arnold, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1857 at Arnold, he died in 1900 aged 43 yrs, his mother Clara Mary Ann Dickens was born in 1858 at Irchester, Northamptonshire , they were married on 23rd September 1878 at the parish church at Irchester, Northamptonshire, they went on to have the following children, Edith b1880, Eliza b1881, Florence b1883, George b1885, Wallace b1891, James b1894 and Emma b1896 all were born in Arnold. In the 1911 Census the family are living at 19 Draytons Yard , Arnold and are shown as Mary 53 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Wallace 20 yrs a coal miner( hewer,) James 17 yrs a hosiery trimmer and Emma 15 yrs a laundress He was raised in Arnold and was educated at the British School on Front Street.
Lance Corporal James Sulley attested on 31st August 1914 at Nottingham and his attestation papers show he was a short service attestation of 3yrs, he gave his age as 20 yrs and 266 days and states he was in the hosiery business. His medical details show he was 5 feet 7 ½ inches tall,133 lbs and had a chest of 38 inches. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in the regimental records show that he joined the 1st battalion near Richebourg in France on the 7th February 1915, when he was posted to serve with “A” Company. He was wounded in action on 20th October 1915 and was admitted to Etaples field hospital from where he was returned to England on 27th October 1915 he later returned to his battalion but was killed in action during the battle of the Somme on 5th July 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. His personal effects were returned to his mother Mary Sulley.
