Family History

Charles Edward Richardson was born in 1879 at Mansfield and was the son of the late Edward a farmer and Annie Richardson née Hickling of Breck Hill farm, Maitland Road, Woodthorpe. His father Edward was born in 1833 at Oxton he died in 1883 aged 50 yrs, his mother Annie Hickling was born in 1851 at Nottingham, they were married in 1877 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Charles Edward b1879, Gertrude Amelia b1881 and Florence Ann b1882 all were born in Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family lived at Breck Hill farm , Maitland Road, Woodthorpe and were shown as Annie 60 yrs a widow, she is living with her children Gertie Amelia 29 yrs no occupation listed and Charles 32 yrs a milinery salesman Charles's probate was proven on 10th October 1919 at Nottingham and shows him as Charles Edward Richardson of Breckhill farm, Woodthorpe Drive, Arnold a Private in H.M. Army died on or since 19th April 1917, in Mesopotamia his effects of £1099, 10 shillings and 2 pence were left to Gertrude Amelia Sumner Richardson and Florence Annie Richardson spinsters.

Military History

Private Charles Edward Richardson enlisted in April 1916 at Derby and after initial training was posted to their 1/4th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers The unit had previously served in Gallipoli landing there on the 7th June 1915. By January 1916 it was based in Egypt having been evacuated from Gallipoli. In March 1917, the battalion was part of the force commanded by General Sir Archibald Murray which began the invasion of Turkish controlled Palestine. Charles was killed in action whilst in Palestine on 19th April 1917. Having no known grave his name is recorded on the Jerusalem Memorial Israel Panel 18
