Alfred was born in 1890 at Shirebrook, near Mansfield, the son of Walter and Catherine Ping. At some time prior to the outbreak of the war the family moved to live at No 2 Sherbrooke Road, Daybrook. By the 1911 census he is still living with his widowed mother at 2 Sherbrook Road, Daybrook ,he is 20 years of age single and a hosiery trimmer, he has 3 siblings He married Elizabeth Ping (nee Whitworth ) on 7th July 1915 in Nottingham . Following his death Elizabeth remarried and became Elizabeth Tinkler and went to live at 19 Roden Street, Alfred Street, Nottingham.
He enlisted into army on 7th September 1914 and attested at Nottingham. He gave his age as 23 years and 290 days and stated his occupation was hosiery trimmer. He was enlisted into the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and was posted to their 13th Battalion. He landed in France on 30th July 1915 and was killed in action at during the battle of Arras. He is buried at Houdain Lance Cemetery, France
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 28 April 1917: 'Ping. Killed in action April 9th 1917, Lance Corporal AW Ping, KRR. Wife.' An obituary appeared in the Nottingham Post on 1st May 1917 as follows ' 'PING killed in action April 9th Lance Corporal AW Ping, King’s Royal Rifles, age 26, son of Catherine Ping, 2 Sherbrooke Road, Daybrook. Mother, sisters, brother.' In memoriam notices were published in the Nottingham Evening Post 9th April 1918 :- “PING. – In affectionate remembrance of my dearly loved husband, Lance-Corpl. A. W. Ping, K.R.R., who was killed in action April 9th, 1917, aged 26, of 10, Duncombe-street, late Daybrook. Ever in my thoughts. – Sorrowing wife. “PING. – In loving memory of Lce.-Cpl. Alfred W. Ping, Daybrook, killed in action April 9th, 1917.
