Samuel was born at Arnold on the 19th November 1898, the son of Joseph and Thirza Peck (nee Anibal) , a grocer in Arnold. He was educated at the British School and after leaving he was employed as a collier at one of the local pits. He was married on the 5th December 1917, at Basford Registrar Office to Louie Peck (Nee Ellis) and they lived at 26 Brookfield Road, Arnold, Nottingham. They had one son, George William who was born March 1918, who eventually became a printer and died on the 24th February 1964. On 2nd April 1919 his widow Louise received notification from the pensions office that she would receive a pension of 20 shilling and 5 pence a week from 7th April 1919 for herself and her child.
Private Samuel Peck originally attested on 19th July 1916 at Derby where he gave his age as 17 years and 10 months, stated he was a colliery banks man was single and lived with his parents at 20 Burford St, Arnold .He went into the reserves in the first instance into the Yorkshire Regiment with regimental number 243820. On 14th July 1917 he was mobilized and eventually went to France on 3rd January 1918 arriving at Etaples where on the 6th January 1918 was posted to the 6th battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. He served with this regiment until he was killed in action near the St Quentin Canal he is buried at Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France
