Richard was born at Ormskirk Formby, Lancashire in 1894, the son of James a roadman with the county council and Elizabeth Ann Ormandy née Wilson. of Crowns Yard , Redhill, Arnold. His father James was born in 1861 at Dalton, Lancashire, his mother Elizabeth Ann Wilson was born in 1867 at Underbarrow, Westmorland, they were married on 20th April 1893 at Grange, Lancashire they went on to have 8 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Ricard Wilson b1894 Formby Donald b1897 Formby, Margaret b1901 Denton, Lincolnshire, Sally b1902 Denton, Daisy b1904 Belgrave, Leicester, Edwin b1907 Arnold and Ethel b1909 Arnold The family moved to the Nottingham area around 1906 and the 1911 census shows the family living at 3 Crowns Yard, Redhill, Nottingham and are shown as James 50 yrs a roadman for the county council, he is living with his wife 44 yrs and their children, Wilson 17 yrs a butcher, Donald 14 yrs a gardener, Margaret 10 yrs a scholar, Sally 9 yrs a scholar, Daisy 7 yrs, Edwin 4 yrs and Ethel 2 years of age.
Lance Corporal Richard Wilson Ormandy enlisted into the Army in 1915 and was posted to the Cyclist Corps and soon found himself with their 77th North Midland Division Cycle Company. He went to Ireland during the time of the Irish Rebellion He was later transferred to the 19th Battalion Army Cyclist Corps, in France. His army service records contain a number of items concerning his death, including a message to his father James stating that the army 'regret to inform him of the death of his son 18423 Lance Corporal R W Ormandy of the 19th Corp of Cyclist who was accidentally drowned in France on 20th May 1918' . Also included are details of a court of enquiry into his death convened on 22nd May 1918 .A number of witnesses all being his comrades testified that while they were bathing in the river at Ailly-sur-Somme, James was swimming when he got into difficulties and started to shout for help, a number jumped into the water to save him, however but when he was brought out of the water he was found to be dead even after resuscitation had taken place. The witnessed believed he had suffered from cramp while swimming leading to his drowning. The result of the court of enquiry found that he had accidentally drowned while bathing. He is buried in the Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-Sur-Somme, France
In memoriam published 20th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ORMANDY. – In loving memory of L.-Corpl. R. W. Ormandy, drowned in France May 20th, 1918.
