Family History

Isaac was born at Arnold in 1887, he was the son of the late Isaac a grocer and Sarah Ann Morris née Anthony of 115 Front Street, Arnold. His father Isaac was born in 1844 in Arnold, he died in 1896 aged 52 yrs, his mother Sarah Ann Anthony was born in 1851 at Arnold, she died in 1915 she was 64 yrs of age, they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. They had 8 children sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Betsy Ann b1878, Lucy Emma b1879, Isaac b1887 and Sarah Ann b1892 all were born in Arnold. In the 1911 Census the family are living at 115 Front Street, Arnold and are shown as Sarah Ann 58 yrs a widow working in the chip potatoe business and Isaac is 23 yrs of age, single and a brickyard labourer and Sarah Ann 19 yrs a shirt hand. Isaac married his wife Mabel Charlesworth (born 1886) they lived at 23 St Albans Road and 124 Front Street, Arnold, they went on to have three children, Annie born 1916 and twins Mabel and William Alfred born in 1917. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week which commenced on 17th June 1918.

Military History

Private Isaac Morris enlisted into the Army at the recruiting station in Hucknall and joined the Essex regiment. The Battalion were at Lemos and on the 12th August 1915 they landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli. With the remainder of the army out in Gallipoli they withdrew in December 1915 moving first to Alexandria and then to Palestine. It was here in Palestine (this part of the old Palestine is now known as Israel) that he was killed in action on 27th November 1917 when aged 30 years, in an engagement against the Turkish Army. He is buried at Ramleh War cemetery Israel
