Frank was born in 1894 at Sneinton, in Nottingham and resided in Arnold, he was the son of Harriet Marshall. His father had died prior to his enlistment and he had 3 siblings, the family resided at 6 Kelks Yard, Front Street, Arnold .He was employed as a brewers bottler at Home brewery on Mansfield Road.
He enlisted on 5th September into the Lincolnshire Regiment at Nottingham and was posted to their 8th battalion after training.He gave his age as 20 years and 210 days and was born at Sneinton. He stated his father was deceased and his next of kin was his mother Harriett of 6 Kelks Yard, Front Street,Arnold and his occupation was that of a brewers bottler.He was on home service until 10th September 1915 when he was sent to France within days of his arrival on the 26th September 1915, the day he was killed, General Sir Douglas Haig’s First Army was launched into a major attack between Lens and the La Bassee Canal. This battle was to become known as the Battle of Loos.
