Walter was born at Carrington in 1890, the son of Frederick a dyer at bleach works and Mary Elizabeth Hyman (nee Edlin) of 46 Albert Avenue, Bobbersmill, Nottingham. His father Frederick was born in 1859 at Frisby and his mother Mary Elizabeth Edlin was born in 1857 at Swinderby, they were married in 1881 at Nottingham and had the following children, Rose b1884, Walter b1890 and Frederick b1897. In the 1911 census he is with his family at 46 Albert Ave, Bobbersmill Walter is shown as being 21 years of age and single and a dyer/labourer at a local bleach works, Walter married his wife Grace Annie Vincent in 1914 at Nottingham, they lived at 46 Birketts Row, Ordsall, Retford, they had the following children, Janet b1915 and Edna May b1917 Following his death his widow Grace was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 16th December 1918.
Private Walter Hyman enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Retford into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and served with the 1/5th Territorial Battalion which went to France in February 1915. On the 23rd and 24th May, some shelling was diverted to the Essars Sector and the artillery were very active on both sides. It was during the exchange of artillery fire that Walter who was then aged 28 years, was killed. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos memorial, France
