William Hunt was born in 1886 at Arnold and was the son of the late Samuel a plasterer and Sarah Hunt née Godfrey. His father Samuel was born in 1850 in Leicestershire and his mother Sarah Godfrey was born in 1847 in Arnold. They were married in 1876 their marriage was registered in the Basford Registration District, Sarah brought a son to their marriage Frank Godfrey b1866 in Nottingham. They went on to have two further sons James b1882 Arnold and William b1886 Arnold. His father Samuel died in 1910 at Nottingham he was 58 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at Holts Row, Arnold, and are shown as Sarah 67 yrs a widow she is living with her sons William 25 yrs a he is single and a banksman at a colliery and Frank Godfrey 45 yrs a general labourer. William married his wife Jessie Mallender Barker (born 1888) in 1912 at Nottingham, his wife brought a child to their marriage Ernest Barker b1910, they lived at 15 Front Street, Arnold they had 3 further children, William Henry Hunt b1913, Sydney Hunt b1914 and Jessie Hunt b1915, Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 30th April 1917.
Private William Hunt enlisted at Arnold, into his local regiment, The Sherwood Foresters, and was posted to the 17th (Welbeck Rangers) Battalion. He went to France with his battalion landing there on the 6th March 1916,The battalion moved into the front line trenches at Givenchy on the 1st August 1916, to relieve the 16th Battalion the Rifle Brigade. He was reported wounded and missing after a trench raid carried out during the night of 31st July/1st August 1916. It was not until 15th March 1917 that he was confirmed to have died of wounds in German hands on 1st August 1916. His name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France
