Herbert Gent was born in Daybrook in 1888 and he was the son of John Walter a colliery labourer and the late Ada Ann Gent née Archer of 1 Daybrook Cottages, Daybrook. His father John Walter was born in 1862 at South Normanton, his mother Ada Ann Archer was born in 1865 at Daybrook, she died in 1913 aged 48 yrs, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children, Herbert b1888, Florence b1896 and Thomas b1902 all were born in Daybrook. In the 1911 Census the family living at Mansfield Road, Daybrook. and are shown as John 49 yrs a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Ada Ann 46 yrs and their children, Herbert 23 yrs single and working as a coal miner (hewer), Florence 15 yrs a laundress ironer and Thomas 9 yrs a scholar.
Private Herbert Gent enlisted in Nottingham into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment having the service number 22731. At some time during his service (possibly after he had been wounded and was returning to the front) he was posted to the 16th Battalion The Manchester Regiment. The probability is that at the time of his posting the Manchester’s were in desperate need of reinforcements and Herbert fell into this category. It was during the attack on Cherisy on the 23rd April 1917, that Herbert was killed in action, we will never know if his death was as a result of machine-gun fire or by enemy shell fire. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
