Christopher Fell (junior) was born in 1891 in Arnold, and was the son of Christopher (senior) and Mary Ann Fell nee Glover, of 12 Spout Lane, Arnold, Nottingham. His father Christopher (senior) was born in 1865 at Arnold and his mother Mary Ann Glover was born in 1868 at Beeston, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Arnold were Christopher b1891, Mary Ann b1893, Rose b1899, Lilly Maria b1901, and Thomas b1907. In the 1911 Census the family is living at 12 Spout Lane, Arnold, Nottingham, and are shown as Christopher 46 yrs a carver and gilder, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 43 yrs and their children, Christopher 19 yrs he is shown as single and a market gardener labourer, Mary Ann 18 yrs a blouse machinist, Rose 12 yrs a scholar, Lilly Maria 10 yrs a scholar and Thomas 4 yrs .
Private Christopher Fell, enlisted at Nottingham into the Grenadier Guards shortly after the outbreak of war and after training was posted to the 4th Battalion. The 4th Grenadier Guards took part in the Battle of Loos and on the 26th September, came up against the German second line. French troops, which had been promised to assist in the attack on the second line were slow to advance and the attack failed. The Germans counterattacked and re-took the Hohenzollern Redoubt. The Battle continued back and forth until it was called off in October. Christopher, was one of the many casualties suffered by the British Army during the Battle of Loos. His body was never identified and he has no known grave, being commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France, Panels 5 to 7.
