The Germans shelled battalion headquarters at 5 am on 12th March and then attacked in overwhelming numbers. Despite inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy , the battalion was forced back to the support trench some 150 yards to the rear. The battalion regained the original trench through charges and the excellent work done by the bomber Private Rivers (awarded VC for action). After a day of fighting it was decided at 9 pm, to withdraw to the support line and a new defensive line. At some point William was killed and he has no known grave.
