Jonathan Clegg was born on 13th June 1880 and baptised on 18th July 1880 at St Marys Church, Merfield, Yorkshire and was the son of Joseph Littlewood and Mary Clegg née Hinchcliffe of Wood Bottom Hopton Merfield Yorkshire. His father Joseph Littlewood was born in 1857 at Huddersfield, his mother Mary Hinchcliffe was born in 1861 at Holmfirth, they were married on 21st July 1878 at Mirfield, Yorkshire and had the following children, Jonathan b1880, James b1883, Mary Ellen b1885 and Theodore Hinchclife b1888 Jonathan married Annie Susan Clegg (née Wolfe who worked in service in Nottingham) and they lived at Nelson Terrace Portland Street Daybrook Nottinghamshire. He was the father of Joe b1907, Dora b1905 and Annie Mary Clegg b1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at Nelson Terrace, Portland Street, Arnold and are shown as Jonathan 30 yrs a maltsters labourer he is living with his wife Annie Susan 29 yrs and their children, Dora 6 yrs and Joe 4 yrs of age.
Private Jonathan Clegg enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Daybrook, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He arrived in theatre (France and Flanders) on 6th March 1916 and died of wounds on 6th April 1917. He is buried in Lijssenhoek Military Cemetery Grave Reference: XI C 25A
