Family History

Walter was the son of Henry a collier and Ann Barnes née Frost of Stanley Terrace, Portland Street, Arnold. His father was born in 1847 in Arnold. His mother was born in 1854 in Blidworth. They married in Arnold in 1874 and had 7 children all born in Arnold- William b1877,George b1879,Walter b1884, Joseph b1886, Wright b1889, Ada b1891 and Hilda b1894. Walter married Lydia Pricillia Fell in Arnold in 1902 and they had four children, two of whom died in infancy prior to 1911. Their surviving children were Walter b1903 and Wilfred Eric b1910 both born in Arnold. His mother Ann died in Arnold in 1910 aged 57 yrs. In 1911 Walter lived on Surgays Lane in Arnold with his wife Lydia Priscillia and his two sons Walter and Wilfred Eric. In 1911 his father lived at Stanley Terrace Portland Street Arnold with his two daughters. Hilda was acting as his housekeeper and Ada was a laundress. Henry died in Arnold in 1915 aged 69.

Military History

He enlisted into the Army in Hucknall initially into the Kings Royal Rifle Corps with number R/10061, but at some time was transferred into the Rifle Brigade. On the morning of the 18th October 1916, he was with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade in the trenches near Les Boeufs. During the morning they moved forward into the attack on the German positions the battalion strength being 11 officers and 710 men. The War diary is not clear as to the result of the attack but on the 19th October the battalion is shown as “Remained in Trenches” which indicates a withdrawal to the original line. The list for the attack on the 18th shows 8 Officers wounded, 19 men killed, 91 wounded and 143 missing Walter was amongst these casualties. He has no known grave, His name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France
