Family History

Walter Gilbourne was born in 1897 he was the son of James a coal miner and Catherine Gilbourne née Hatton and the brother of Samuel, William Thomas , Harry and Frank Gilbourne and Fanny Bradley. James was born in 1850, (he died in 1913 aged 64yrs) Catherine Hatton was born in 1852 both were born in Greasley, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 25 Nethergreen, Eastwood, James 61 yrs is a retired coal miner he is living with his wife Catherine 59 yrs and 6 of their children including William Thomas 26 yrs a coal miner and Walter 17 yrs a coal miner.

Military History

Private Walter Gilbourne enlisted in Derby, on 29th March 1915 and went to France 10th November 1915. He suffered a gunshot wound to his chest on 1st July 1916 at Gommecourt on the Somme and was taken to the 20th Casualty Clearing Station, then to No. 61 General Hospital. He was then transferred to England and died from his wounds on 16th July 1916, aged 22 at the University War Hospital, Southampton. Buried: Brinsley (St. James The Great) Churchyard, Nottinghamshire. United Kingdom. Old ground, near West wall.

Extra Information

His brother William Thomas Gilbourne also served during the Great War in the Royal Garrison Artillery and died on 26th January 1920
