Family History

George William Leadbetter was born in 1888 at Nottingham, he was the son of Daniel and Sarah Ann Leadbeater née Cholerton and the brother of Joseph and Ethel Leadbeater. Daniel was born in 1848 at Allestree, Derbyshire, Sarah Ann Cholerton was born in 1853 at Derby, they were married on 6th November 18770 at St Joh’s Church, Derby, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family lived at 24 Lincoln Street Nottingham Daniel 63 yrs is a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 58 yrs and their children, Joseph 38 yrs a stoker, George 23 yrs a card puncher and Ethel 17 yrs . He married Mary Elizabeth Etches on 2nd November 1912 at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham they had a son George William Leadbeater born 28th April 1913, In 1915 they lived at 16 City Terrace Carlton Hill and Mary later lived at 73 Foxhill Road (both Carlton Nottingham). Commencing 18th February 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private George William Leadbetter attested on 1st May 1915, living at 15 City Terrace, Carlton Hill Nottingham, he was 25 yrs and 11 months old, he was a town labourer, weighing 116 lbs and standing 5'4" tall. He served at home until 5th March 1916 . He was transferred 20th March 1916 to 181st Tunnelling Coy Royal Engineers and attached to 255th Tunnelling Coy 20th April 1916.. He died from concussion.
