John Edward Keys was born in 1888 in Nottingham and was the son of John Keys a green grocer and shop keeper and Jane Keys née Strutt of 148 Alfred Street, Nottingham His father Jon was born in 1856 in Nottingham and his mother Jane Strutt was born in 1856 also in Nottingham , they were married in 1880, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district , they had a further child a daughter Mable also born in Nottingham in 1882 His sister Mabel was married in 1905 to Oskar Erich Freudenburg (a German) In the 1911 census the family are living at 148 Alfred Street and are shown as John Keys 55 yrs a green grocer and shop keeper , he is living with his wife Jane 55 yrs and their son John Edward 23 yrs a journeyman joiner , also living with them is their married daughter Mabel Freudenburg and her son Alfred Freudenburg 5 yrs.
Private John Edward Keys, enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with the Devon and Cornwall Light Infantry, he later transferred to the 2nd battalion Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action on 19th August 1916. He is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval.

Keys, who was killed by shell fire on August 18th, 1916, only and dearly-loved son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
