Family History

Alfred Sutton was born in 1882 at Great Cressingham, Norfolk and was the son of Christopher a yard hand on a farm and Francis Sutton née Robinson of Gooderstone, King's Lynn. His father Christopher was born in 1856 at Great Cressingham, his mother Frances Maria Robinson was born in 1857 at Swaffham, they were married on 16th March 1879 at Langford, Norfolk they went on to have the following children, Edward b1880, Alfred b1881, Emily Maria b1884, Walter Thomas b1889 and Rose Annie b1892 all were born at Great Cressingham. Alfred married his wife Sarah Elizabeth Simsey (born Thorney ) on 5th May 1904 at Fletton, Northampton, they went on to have the following children, Nellie Simsey born 16th October 1904 at Thorney, Cambridge, Edmund born 29th January 1909 at Thorney, Miriam born and died 1913, Walter Thomas born 5th February 1914 Sutton Bonnington and Alfred John born 26th January 1916 at Sutton Bonnington. The family lived at 100 Main Street, Sutton Bonnington.

Military History

Lance Corporal Alfred Sutton enlisted at Loughborough on 27th March 1915 whist residing at Sutton Bonnington, he gave his age as 33 yrs and 290 days and was a shepherd, his next of kin was his wife Sarah Elizabeth of the same address. He stated he had previous military service with the service number 17637 in the 3rd battalion Norfolk Regiment, He was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment and landed in France on 27th May 1915 on 10th November 1915 was transferred to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He transferred to the Military Police on 15th February 1917 and died of Malaria 30th October 1918 buried in Beirut War Cemetery.
