Family History

John William Dewsbury was born in 1897 to John a farmer and Sarah Dewsbury (née Kerry) of Valley Farm, Sutton Bonnington. His father was born in 1862 at Normanton, his mother Sarah Kerry was born in 1861at Newbold, Loughborough. Married in 1865, they had the following children - Tom b.1886, Rachel b.1887 and James b.1888 (all at Normanton), Joseph b.1890, Sarah b.1891,George b.1893, Lillian b.1894 John William b.1897, Charles Marshall b.1898 and Ella May b.1900 (all at Sutton Bonnington). In 1911, they lived at Valley Farm, Sutton Bonnington.

Military History

John William Dewsbury attested on 23rd November 1915 at Loughborough and was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 24th January 1916 at Derby and posted to the Sherwood Foresters . He embarked from Folkstone on 26th February 1917 landing in Boulogne the same day. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 23rd March 1917 and to Corporal on 22nd May 1917. He was killed in action and is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery Grave Reference: 36.H.12
