William Gadd Ball was born in 1897 at Sutton Bonnington and was the son of William Pepper Ball a builder and Emma Ball née Gadd of Sutton Bonnington. His father William Pepper was born in 1863 at Sutton Bonnington, his mother Emma Gadd was born in 1857 also at Sutton Bonnington, they were married on 5th July 1887 at Sutton Bonnington and went on to have 6 children, sadly four were to die in infancy or early childhood, they had a further surviving son John Henry Ball born 1893 also in Sutton Bonnington. In the 1911 census the family are living at Sutton Bonnington village and are show as William Pepper Ball 48 yrs a builder, he is living with his wife Emma Ball 54 yrs and their children, John Henry Ball 17 yrs an apprentice joiner and William Gadd Ball 13 yrs a scholar.
Private William Gadd Ball enlisted at Wolverhampton whilst residing at Wolverhampton, he initially served with the service number 2566 in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 9th April 1917 whilst serving with the 8th battalion Royal Fusiliers and is buried in Houdain Lane Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.
Battlefield cross in church, inscription: 'In memory of W.G Ball Royal Fusiliers aged 19 years who was killed in action at Arras April 9th 1917' His brother John Henry served with the Royal Engineers.
