Family History

Walter Joseph Elliott was born in 1897 at Ratcliffe on Soar and was the son of George Elliott a farmer and Elizabeth Elliott of Ratcliffe on Soar. His father George was born in 1856 at Whysall and his mother Elizabeth was born in 1858 at Thorpe, Nottinghamshire, they were married and went on to have the following children, Bertie Ambrose b1883 Whysall, Florence Edith b1885 Chilwell, John William b1886 Whysall, George Thomas b1889 Ratcliffe, Clarence David b1892 Ratcliffe, Cyril Harold b b1893 Ratcliffe, Walter Joseph b1897 Ratcliffe and Leonard b1900 Ratcliffe. In the 1901 census the family are living at Winking Hill, Ratcliffe on Soar.

Military History

Private Walter Joseph Elliott enlisted at West Bridgford and served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 1st July 1917, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, panel 87-89

Extra Information

Three of his brothers also served in the 'Great War' Cyril Harold served with the Leicestershire Regiment, Clarence David served with the Canadian Engineers George Thomas served with the Canadian Mounted Rifles all three survived the war.
