George Ernest was the son of Lily Annie Roper. Lily was one of the 12 children of Thomas and Ann Roper (Mary J., Ada A., William T., Walter, Bertha, Elizabeth Ellen, Zillah Anne, Gertrude, Ernest, Lily, Ethel and Albert), only seven of whom were still living at the time of the 1911 Census. In 1871 the family home was on Back Lane, Normanton on Soar, but by 1881 and until at least the time of George's death in 1918, the family home was on Far Lane, Normanton on Soar. In 1901 George (1) and his mother Lily (23), who was single, were living at Far Lane where Lily was housekeeper to her widowed father, Thomas (59) a railway platelayer. Also in the household were Lily's two younger siblings, Ethel (18) a shirt seamstress working from home, and Albert (16) who worked on a farm. George and Lily were still living with her father in 1911; also in the household was Maud Swift (7), Thomas' granddaughter.
Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. George served in the RNVR from 21 August 1917 and was in the draft for the British Expeditionary Force (France) on 2 April 1918, joining Hawke Battalion on 7 April 1918. He was reported missing, assumed killed in action, four months later in August 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel 1 and 2).
