He was the son of Walter and Harriet James and the brother of Florence, Annie, Nellie, Gertrude, Walter, Winifred and Albert James. In 1911 they lived at Adbolton near Nottingham. On 30th May 1916 aged 24, he married Daisy Hopkinson Briggs aged 30 of Adbolton. The wedding was conducted by the Reverend W.J. Saward at St Edmunds Church Holme Pierrepont.
Thomas William James (known as William) enlisted with the North Staffordshire Regiment and then served with the East Lancashire Regiment.
