Herbert was the son of Joseph and Hannah Elizabeth Hallam (née Mills). His father Joseph was born in East Leake, Nottinghamshire, in 1856, the son of William and Elizabeth Hallam (née Walley). He was baptised at St Mary, East Leake, on 29 October 1856. In 1861 the family was living on West Street, East Leake. His mother Hannah Elizabeth (k/a Elizabeth) was born in Costock, Nottinghamshire, in about 1858, the daughter of Joseph and Maria Mills. She was baptised at Costock St Giles on 21 March 1858. Joseph and Hannah Elizabeth were married at Gotham St Lawrence on 4 June 1876 . According to the 1911 Census they had had nine children of whom only six survived infancy or childhood. Their surviving children, who were all born in Gotham, were: John b. 2 December 1878 (reg. 1879 J/F/M) bap. Gotham St Lawrence 26 January 1879; Walter b. 15 June 1885; Alfred Ernest b. 13 October 1887; Herbert birth registered 1891 (J/F/M); Joseph William b. 1893 and Margaret Mary b. 2 May 1895 bap. St Lawrence 1 November 1895. In 1891 Joseph (35) a plaster miner, and his wife were living on Monks Lane, Gotham, with their four sons, John (12), Watler (5), Alfred (3) and Herbert (under one year). Joseph and Hannah lived on Monks Lane for the next twenty years. By 1901 only Herbert, Joseph (7) and Margaret (5) were living with their parents and this was still the case in 1911; Herbert was a milk hand (plaster mine), Joseph a farm worker and Margaret a hosiery factory hand. Joseph snr. probably died in 1912 and his widow Hannah Elizabeth in 1934. Henry married Alice Kidger in 1911.
2nd Bn Lincolnshire Regiment. Herbert was killed in action on 17 November 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. (Panel 35 to 37).
