John William was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Dakin (nêe Bexon). His father Samuel was born in Kegworth in about 1861 and was the son of John Dakin (b. Kegworth) and his wife Ann (b. East Leake). In 1881 John, Ann, their son Samuel (20), an agricultural labourer, and his siblings were living on Bag Lane Gotham. Samuel probably married Elizabeth Bexon at Nottingham St Saviour on 24 February 1883 and they had at least two children: Eliza Ann b. 1883, and John William b. Kegworth 1885 bap. Kegworth parish church 8 November 1885 (parents Samuel and Elizabeth Dakin). Samuel, Elizabeth and their daughter Eliza have not yet been traced on the 1891 Census, but John William (5) was living on Town Street, Gotham, with his paternal grandparents, John and Ann Dakin, and two of their children, George (27) and Ruth (15). Samuel, Elizabeth and their children Eliza and John have also not been traced on the 1901 Census. By 1911 John (24), a gypsum miner, was living with his widowed grandmother, Ann Dakin (75) on Nottingham Road, Gotham, and this remained his home until his death in 1916. Both parents probably predeceased John. His married sister, Annie, was awarded administration of his Will.
