William and Mary Walker had married in 1892. They lived in Thrumpton Lane, Retford and had a family of nine children all born in Retford between 1894 and 1910. William was employed as a telegraph wire man and in 1911, his wife was working with him employed as a railway worker. Their third child, Ernest was born in 1899 and it was he who joined the army at very young age and never returned.
Ernest enlisted at Derby in the Welsh Regiment. He was initially given no. 55704 which after spending time in training, was changed to 58160. He went to France with the 2nd Battalion and was killed in action at only 18 years old and is buried in the Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau, France
