Jerimiah Brown Cocking married Ellen Howard in 1889 at Gainsborough. In 1901 they were living at 22 Staffords Yard, North Street, Gainsborough and had three boys, Frank born 1891, followed by twins Thomas and Henry born 1897 (same reg. no.). In 1902 the couple had another child, a girl, named Jane and in 1909 Thomas’ twin, Henry died age 11. In the 1911 census, the family consists of Jeremiah (described as town scavenger working for town council) and wife Ellen with children Thomas and Jane. Thomas is working in a cardboard box packaging factory making boxes and resident at 6 Shugars [sic] Yard, North Street, Gainsborough. Thomas may have moved to Retford, as according to his army record, he enlisted at Retford and for reasons unknown, used the name Smith. His parents names (Cocking) are registered on his grave registration.
Thomas was formerly Regimental number 28942 of the 17th Battalion of the Notts And Derby Regiment before transferring to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He went to France where he died of wounds received and is buried in the Buried Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension Nord, France
