Sam Sanderson was born in 1887 the son of John and Elizabeth Ann Sanderson (née Justice). John Sanderson was a joiner/carpenter by trade and was resident in Spital Hill. Sam had a sister, Mary Ann who was born in Retford in 1890 and a brother, John, also born in Retford in 1899.
