Family History

John Robinson was born in Retford in 1879. He was the son of John a collier and bird specialist and Annie Robinson of 3 Thrumpton Lane, Retford, Notts. His father John was born in 1856 at Retford, his mother Annie was born in 1857 at Retford, they were married C1877 they had 12 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census he is shown living with his family at 32 Pearl Street, Sheffield. His father John is 55 yrs and is a bird specialist, he is living with his wife Annie John is 31 years of age, single and a furnace worker, born at Retford also living at the address is his brother William 33 yrs a furnace worker.

Military History

Private John Robinson enlisted in Sheffield and served with the 3rd battalion Coldstream Guards. John was killed in action on 15 September 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the La Ferte-sous-Jourarre Memorial.

Information on John Robinson has been provided courtesy of Alan Laurie The death of Pte J Bacon Robinson of the 2nd Coldstream Guards was reported in the Retford Times of 9th October 1914 although he had been killed on the 15th September 1914. He was the son of Mr John Robinson 3, Thrumpton Lane, Retford who about 12 years ago kept the Durham Ox. Pte John Robinson was 34 years of age, was a clever violinist and was educated at the Wesleyan School. Pte Robinson would have terminated his time as a reservist 3 days after he was called up. Sadly John had arranged to be married when he had to re-join his regiment. The Robinson family had another son Arthur Robinson serving at the Front with the Royal Engineers. George's name appears on Le Ferte Sous Jouarre Memorial carrying the names of 3740 soldiers of the BEF who died in August, September and early October in the Battle of Aisne.
