George Henry Parker was the second of 11 children born to John and Mary Jane Parker, nee Laxton on 6 Nov 1876 at Peterborough. In 1891 the family were living at 22 Albert Street, Grantham where the father, John, was earning his living on the railway as a carriage examiner. Two years later, his wife, Mary Jane died age 42 at Grantham. On the 28 May 1898, George Henry married Clara Louis Earl at Grantham and moved to Retford living at 13 Artillery Terrace, Ordsall. The couple had a child, Dorothy born in Retford in 1899. George was employed on the railway as a railway engine stoker for the Great Northern Railway which he did for until joining the colours.
From the Grantham Journal - The wife of Private G H Parker has been notified that he died from amputation of the leg in Germany. Private Parker was the second son of Mr J Parker of 66 Stamford Street, Grantham. He joined the army for home defence soon after the war broke out, but was sent to France in December 1917. Previous to the war he was employed as a fireman on the Great Northern Railway at Retford and was greatly esteemed by his fellow workers in that town. George Parker's grave is in the Niederzwheren Cemetry in Hanover, Germany. This cemetery contains the burials of prisoner's of war who died in captivity. Burials were transferred there from other smaller cemeteries. A letter received from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Feb 2010 confirmed that George Henry was transfered from the Hameln Cemetery in 1923. There was a WW1 PoW camp at Hameln.
