Family History

Ernest Sydney Morton was born in Retford in 1888 and was one of nine children born to James Morton and Julian Ann Shepley. They had married at Retford in 1874 with James earning a living as a tailor. The children consisted of three girls and six boys whose births ranged from 1875 till 1883. Unusually, the family resided at 41 Albert Road, Ordsall, Retford from 1874 until after the 1911 census. By 1911 all but two of the now adult children had left the family home to make their own was in life, with Ernest Sydney Morton working as a domestic groom and resident at The Hall Stables, Bawtry.

Pte E S Morton Retford Times 7 July 1916 The late Pte E S Morton, K.O.Y.L.I. who died from wounds received in France was the son of Mr and Mrs James Morton, Albert Road, Retford. He id buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery, France
