Family History

James Allen Lee to give him his full name was born in 1888 at Hatfield in Hertfordhsire and was the son of James Martin a carpenter/ joiner and Jessie Ann Lee, of 8, Frederick St., Retford. We first come across him in the 1891 census when he is 3 years of age , living with his parents at Batterdale, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. By the 1901 census he is living with his widowed 73 year old grandfather Allen Lee a gamekeeper at Haverholme Park, Ewerby, Sleaford at this time he is 13 years of age. In the 1911 census he is 23 years of age , single and a boarder at 104 Trinity Street, Gainsborough, he is living with William Stainton a fish monger and his family, he is an engineering machine erector.

Military History

He enlisted at Retford and at first served with service number 36968 in the North Staffordshire regiment, he later transferred to A company 7/8th battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. On 30th May 1918 he died of wounds at 42nd casualty clearing station in France and is buried in Aubigny Communal cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France grave reference IV H 5
