Family History

Arthur was born in Grove in 1899 and was the son of Samuel a farm labourer and Annie Houlden (nee Mills ) Samuel and Annie had a very large family having a total of 11 children, however only seven of which survived through to 1911. In the 1901 census the family are living at 15 Plough Lane, Retford , Arthur is 2 years of age. By the 1911 census the family are now living at 45 East Street , Arthur is now 12 years of age. Following the death of his father his mother remarried to become of Annie Marshall , of 12, South St., Retford.

Military History

Arthur enlisted in Retford and at first served with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys ) Regiment but later transferred to the East Yorkshire Regiment , he was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 whilst serving in France and he is buried in Bancourt British Cemetery, Pas-De-Calais, France grave reference II J 2
