Clarence Percy Holliday was born in 1894 at Ordsall, he was the son of the late Frederick a general labourer and Annie Elizabeth Holliday née Vallence and the brother of Clarence Percy and Evelyn May Holliday of Ordsall. His father Frederick was born in 1862 at Clarborough, he died in 1917 at Ordsall he was 55 yrs of age, his mother Annie Elizabeth Vallence was born in 1863 at Ordsall, they were married on 5th December 1882 at Ordsall they had 4 children in total, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 they lived at 17 Plough Yard Ordsall Retford Nottinghamshire. Frederick 49 yrs is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 48 yrs and their children, Clarence Percy 17 yrs a contractors labourer and Evelyn May 11 yrs a scholar. Clarence was a cousin to Gunner Trevor John Holliday, D Battery 261st Brigade Royal Field Artillery, who also served and died on 21st February 1918.
Lance Corporal Clarence Percy Holliday enlisted at Retford was with the battalion in the front line north of Jephson's Post when he was shot on 6 October 1915. He had a Gun shot wound to the abdomen and back. He was taken to 26th Casualty Clearing Station and then onto HS Gloucester Castle. He died of his wounds on board ship and was buried at sea on 10 October 1915. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.John Morse
Obituary Lance Corporal Clarence Holliday - Retford Times 29th October 1915 'Ordsall Soldier Killed News has been received that Corporal Clarence Holliday of the Sherwood Foresters, second son of F Holiday of 6a Church lane, Ordsall, died of wounds on 6th October whilst serving in the Dardanelles. The brave soldier, who was only 22, was formerly employed on the Great Northern Railway and enlisted very shortly after the outbreak of hostilities. He was wounded some time ago in France and after his recovery was sent to the Dardanelles. Much sympathy is felt with Mr Holliday in the loss of his son, who was highly respected in a wide circle of friends. Mr Holliday has been employed at the Northern Rubber Works for twenty six years.'
