John Hempshall (junior) was born at Rotherham in 1888 and was the son of John Hempshall (senior) a railway signalman and his first wife the late Charlotte Eliza Hempshall, née Hughes of 61, Wharton St., Retford, His father John was born in 1860 at Kexby, Lincolnshire, his mother Charlotte Eliza Hughes was born in 1869 at Little Dean, Gloucestershire, she died in 1898 at Retford, aged 29 yrs, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Rotherham registration district, they went on to have the following children, Mary Eleanor b1885, John b1888, Henry Edward b1890 and Edith b1894 all were born in Rotherham. His father remarried in 1899 to his second wife Emma Jane Dawson b1864 Apley, Lincs. In the 1901 census the family can be found at 22 Hind Street, Ordsall John is living with his second wife Emma J , and his children John aged 12 years ,Henry aged 10 years and Edith aged 6 years are living with him. In the 1911 census his father is living at 49 Wharton Street, Retford, he is shown as being John Hempshall 49 yrs a railway signalman, he is living with his wife Emma Jane 45 yrs and their daughter Edith 17 yrs a clerk It has not yet bee possible to trace John (junior) on the 1911 census
John enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys ) Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1917, his body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Loos memorial.
