Family History

George Hartley was born in `1885 at Retford, he was the only son of the late William a general labourer and the late Ann Hartley née Lane. William was born in 1852 at Treswell, he died in 1905 aged 53 yrs, Ann Lane was born in 1850 at Retford, she died in 1907 aged 57 yrs, they were married in 1873 at East Retford, they had 8 children, seven of whom were daughters and their only son was George. In the 1911 census George is living at 37 Beardsalls Row, East Retford, he is 25 yrs of age single and a labourer in an Indian Rubber works, he is living with his brother in law William Robert Kinton, 32 yrs a fish and rabbit dealer.

Military History

Private George Hartley enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at East Retford, he served with the 1st battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment landing in France on 13th August 1914 and died on 5th April 1915 he is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Hessen, Germany grave reference V A 9
