George was the son of George Harpley an artist and painter and Minnie Harrison. He had an elder sister Alicia and elder brother Henry Lewis . In 1911 the family was living at 39 Grove Park Camberwell, London. His probate record administered in London on 3rd March 1917 shows him as George Carmichael Harrison of 84 Grove Park, Denmark Hill, Surrey a 2nd Lieutenant Royal Garrison Artillery , who died on 10th January 1917 in France, and left his estate of £380-2s-6d to his father George Harplay Harrison an artist.
On the Royal Naval Reserve Index 1903-1922 George Carmichael Harrison was listed as an Able Seaman with a service number of AA 374 of the London division, Royal Naval Reserve. The London Gazette 7th January 1916, under the heading Special Reserve of Officers, states that he was appointed as a second lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery from 3rd January 1916. He served with the 6th Anti Aircraft battery , 24th heavy artillery group, Royal Garrison Artillery. His medal index card shows that he went to France on 25th April 1916. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium grave reference IX B 19
