Family History

Robert James was born in Retford in 1898 and was the son of George a railway engine driver and Elizabeth Ann Drakefield,(nee Bellamy ) of 21, Station Rd., Retford, Notts. George and Elizabeth had a very large family , on the 1911 census they state that they have had 14 children in total, however only 11 survived until 1911. In the house at 21 Station Road, on the night of the census are seven of their children including Robert and two grandchildren. Robert is 13 years of age and is still at school.

Military History

Robert enlisted at Retford and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment ) and he was killed inaction on 14th February 1916 whilst still only 18 years of age. His body was never recovered and identified and therefore his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial , Ypres , Belgium
