Joseph Reginald was born in Stamford Lincolnshire in 1898 and was the son of Joseph (senior) a house painter and decorator and Florence Cutler (nee Newborn). Jospeh was from Deepng St James, Lincolnshire and was married twice, the first time to Florence Newborn in around 1893, they had 6 children in all the first three whilst living in Stamford. Around the turn of the centuary in 1900 the family moved to Retford where they had a further three children. Joseph (senior) then married his second wife Emily Clarkson in 1909 in Retford and they had a further three children. In the 1901 census Joseph (senior) and Florence are living at 1 Thomas Street, Retford, where Joseph is 2 years of age . By the time of the 1911 census Joseph has married his second wife Emily and the family are living at 23 Sheaf Terrace, Thrumpton Lane, Retford, in this census Joseph is referred to by his second name 'Reginald' he is 12 years of age and still at school.
Joseph enlisted on 19th May 1916 in Retford, on his attestation form he states his age to be 18 years and that his occupation is that of a cleaner at the Great Central Railway. His address is given as 59 Albert Road , Retford and his father Joseph of the same address is his next of kin.On 20th May 1916 he is put into the Army Reserve. On 8th May 1917 now 19 years of age he is given a medical at Derby which he passes and on 26th July 1917 he is mobilised .He underwent training and was embarked for the Western Front on 26th December 1917, on the 28th he was posted to the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters and on 2nd January to the 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters and finally joined the battalion in the field on 12th January 1918. On 21st March 1918 he is posted as missing in action and on 2nd May 1918 is officially listed as killed in action as of 21st March 1918. His body was never recovered and his name is therefore commemorated on the Arras memorial.
